A great deal will depend on the weight of the color tiles you are using, and the durability of the framing material.   As an example, mosaic crosses using a cement frame and plastic or shell tiles can be much larger than ones made with a plaster frame and glass tiles.  You may want to experiment with various materials to determine which combinations are most durable and appealing to the eye.
