Pain and risk factors associated with Peripheral Neuropathy.
In its most common form, Peripheral Neuropathy can cause very mild to intense pain, tingling sensations and numbness in your hands and feet. This pain can also occur in your forearms and shoulders as well.
Some high-risk factors and high-risk behaviors for peripheral neuropathy include: diabetes — more than 50% of persons with diabetes develop peripheral neuropathy at some point; long-term alcohol abuse; various autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis; family member with a history of peripheral neuropathy; exposure to toxins or drugs and medications known to cause neuropathy; vitamin deficiencies such as Thiamin and vitamin B12; HIV infection; and pressure on a nerve - which may occur from repetitive stress injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
