Granted red wigglers do not have the same appeal as a puppy or a kitten but they can teach valuable lessons in responsibility and soil management. You get science and social in one activity. Worm bins can be purchased or made at home. Bedding and food is essentially free as the items used would have been discarded anyway. The worm compost that is produced will be the best soil additive you can find which may lead them into a next project.

There is still much debate as to whether Ethoxyquin is dangerous or not. Though it is listed as a hazardous chemical by OSHA Hazard Communication Standards some the FDA are still saying it is harmless.
