What is Calcaneal apophysitis
The scientific terms for what is commonly known as severs disease is Calcaneal apophysitis. This condition commonly happens in 10 to 15 year old; it is a growth plate injury that happens at the back of the calcaneus. More commonly Boys are affected who are very active but does affect girls. It is also more common at the start of the winter sports season when the ground is still hard from the summer. The heel bone has two bits of bone separated by cartilage. Calcaneal apophysitis is a strain of that cartilage area. The condition is self limiting and the children with it always out grow it with no ill effects as the two bits of bone fuse at around age 15.
